Why do you want to study project management, what makes you ambitious and motivated?
The reason I enrolled in the project management course was the need for a rather radical change in the current course of my career development.
I currently work in a large international company, and more specifically in a team that deals with the technical support of devices for corporate customers from all over the world. In a few years, I managed to reach the pinnacle of technical development within my organization, and it was time to decide where to go next.
At the same time, I have been considering for quite some time to change the very type of my work and escape from the “technical” part, so to speak.
I hope that the nature of the work of a project manager would better suit the kind of person I am and would utilize and develop my personality and skills better. I graduated from a language high school and then studied German philology at university, so I would say that my interests and strengths are more in the humanities and direct communication with people.
What are the important skills and qualities of a certified project manager?
First of all, I would put my ability to be extremely organized and consistent, which I apply not only in my professional life but even in my personal life. I set myself clear goals for years to come and follow them relentlessly.
I can work under pressure: As a frontline engineer, it depends on my decisions and actions to bring the customer’s machine back online as quickly as possible, restore their production or save their company data.
Due to the specificity of my work, I am used to working with other teams internal to my company, with external support teams, as well as with high-ranking clients.
I feel comfortable conducting business communication in English, and German, which I consider to be a significant advantage.
I am attentive to detail, I do not mind performing monotonous and repetitive operations, keeping strict documentation of every step I take to meet deadlines.
I can learn new things and adapt to a constantly changing (corporate) environment.
What negative qualities of yours will prevent you from being a project manager and how will you eliminate them?
I am mainly concerned about the lack of relevant experience in project management since so far I have always been in a team that does the real work “in the field” so to speak. My plan to change begins precisely with signing up for this course. I am currently on maternity leave, planning to return to work in September. My goal is to complete the course by then.
As a next step, I plan to talk to my line manager about giving me stretch assignments to get to know another part of working in a large corporation (besides support), not just the support role. I believe that this will allow me to communicate with colleagues from other teams and make useful contacts. I will state this intention in the first conversation with my manager. Before I went on maternity leave, I enrolled in an ITIL certification course that the company offered me. After I return to work, I plan to prepare well and take the certification exam. It is realistic to be able to achieve it by the end of the calendar year.
Another area where I feel I need to improve is the ability to present to a large group of people. If I remember correctly, the company offers me training in presentation skills, so this is another direction in which I plan to inform myself in the fall.
I can’t talk about a specific term in advance.
In terms of my personal qualities, my lack of self-confidence would potentially hold me back, as I am not adept at project management. Hopefully, this will change with the current course and my other development plans. Another practice that can be very useful is personal attention to employees. More specifically attention to their physical and mental health. When employees are healthy, well-rested, and energetic, they perform at their best and work runs smoothly.
